Scam Alert: Watch Out for Unexpected Packages

If you come home to a surprise by your front door, be careful before scanning any codes for more information.

An increasingly common scam involves sending unsolicited packages that include malicious QR codes. Recipients open the packages, often finding desirable merchandise inside. They are invited to scan a QR code on or inside the package, which gives scammers access to sensitive information on their phone.  What should you do if you receive an unsolicited package?

  • Notify the retailer.
  • Update account passwords – receiving an unsolicited package may be a sign that personal information has been compromised. I’s a good idea to monitor credit reports and account activity.
  • Protect your identity and exercise caution when entering any personal information online. Always be sure that you’re accessing a secure and valid site
  • Keep the merchandise if you wish – according to The Federal Trade Commission, you have the legal right to keep any items sent to you

As a general reminder, you should never share sensitive account credentials, security codes, or similar data with anyone. Reputable organizations will never contact you and ask that you provide this information. Be mindful of any communication you receive via text, email, and postal mail, as scammers frequently use fake messages to take advantage of unsuspecting individuals.

If you received an unsolicited package and scanned a QR code or provided sensitive information, please contact your local branch or call our Customer Care Center at 888-816-8064 for assistance.
