Scam Alert: Holiday Weekends a Popular Time for Scams

Holiday weekends often mean a rise in scam activity. With banks and many businesses closed on Monday, scammers target weekends like this one as an opportune time to trick people into giving over account access while the chances of seeking assistance and stopping fraud are less likely.

With Monday being Presidents Day – and the added bonus of Valentine’s Day this weekend – be extra vigilant about any unsolicited phone call, text message or email you may receive. Scammers plan to ramp up fraud attempts while many are traveling, shopping and busy with other plans, hoping they’ll be long gone with your money by the time your account reconciles on Tuesday.

How to protect yourself:

  • Never share debit card or account information.
  • Never give out your login credentials or one-time security codes.
  • Never click links in unsolicited texts or emails.
  • Never download an app to provide remote access to someone who contacts you.

Remember, legitimate organizations will never ask for sensitive information like login details or one-time passcodes – and it’s always ok to stop and think before responding.

Although banks are closed on Monday, our City Customer Care Center is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. If you need assistance, feel free to give us a call at 888-816-8064.
