Your First Bank Account

Opening a bank account is a great way to securely store and access your money. And no matter your age or current stage of life, there’s an account that can meet your individual needs.

Popular choices for a first account include checking designed specifically for teens, or a free account that gives you a debit card and mobile banking access with no fees or minimum balance.

Once you’re ready to open an account, there are a few items you’ll need to gather:

  • Your driver’s license or other government-issued ID
  • Your social security card
  • Proof of address, such as a utility bill or lease agreement
  • Some cash or a check to deposit
  • If you’re under 18, you’ll need an adult with these documents to co-sign for the account

To open an account, you can typically fill out an application online or visit your local branch where a banker can walk you through the process. If you opt to apply online, you’ll need to upload photos or scanned copies of the documents listed above.

The financial institution will review your application. Once it’s approved, you can begin making deposits. Look for your debit card to arrive in the mail, download your bank’s mobile app, and ask your employer about setting up direct deposit.
