Scam Alert: Call Forwarding Scams

Scammers are always looking for new ways to gain access to personal information, and their latest tactic involves tricking a victim into forwarding all incoming calls and text messages to the scammer’s device. This allows the scammer to intercept one-time passcodes, two-factor authentication codes and other sensitive information that can provide access to bank accounts, social media profiles and other online accounts. Here’s how it works:

  1. The scammer contacts the victim, often by impersonating a legitimate business like their bank, phone provider or a company they’ve ordered from.
  2. They create a sense of urgency by claiming there’s a problem with the account, a missing package or fraudulent activity.
  3. The scammer provides instructions for a supposed “fix.” They tell the customer to dial a code like one of the following:
    •  AT&T / T‑Mobile:  *21* + destination number + #
    •  Verizon: *72 + destination number + #
    •  US Cellular: *72 or *73 + destination number + #
  1. The code forwards all of the victim’s incoming calls and text messages to the scammer.
  2. The scammer hijacks the customers’ accounts and intercepts any messages from financial institutions attempting to verify fraudulent transactions.

To deactivate call forwarding, the victim must contact their wireless provider for specific instructions.

If you are contacted by phone, text or email about potential fraud or issues with any of your accounts, don’t respond right away. Hang up and and call the company at a phone number you know to be legitimate. And if you think you’ve fallen victim to a scam, call your local branch or our Customer Care Center at 888-816-8064 for assistance.
